Love Perfected

So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. By this is love perfected with us, so that we may have confidence for the day of judgment, because as he is so also are we in this world. (1 John 4:16-17 ESV)

Our love of God can only come from a knowledge of who God is. Not only must we know who He is but who He is in comparison with who we are. We are the gods of our own lives until we are shown the knowledge of The Almighty. His light and holiness show us for who we really are, wicked and depraved. Under that light of comparison do some become humbled toward Him and under that light of comparison do some become rebellious toward Him.

How do we receive this type of knowledge that leads to a right love of our Savior? By communing with Him in prayer and abiding in Him through His word. Scripture says that those who seek diligently will find. How then do we find the wonderful secret knowledge of who our God is without diligently seeking Him? This diligence goes beyond Sunday morning service. It goes beyond even the family devotional. For every disciple of Jesus we must be diligent to spend time with our Lord so that the end result would be that we would look more like our Lord. We must make the pursuit of knowing God more and more our first priority of the day. The more we study about Christ the more we know about God the Father. In fact the history of Jesus Christ is the history of God's love for us. What a wonderful and worthy knowledge worth pursuing!

The pursuit of this awesome knowledge then leads us to love our Savior more and more. It is what perfects the love for Christ in us and the love through Christ for others. It is this intimate knowledge of our Lord that drives us to want more of Him, to serve Him more and to serve Him well, according to His will not our own. It is this mind for Christ and mind of Christ that gives us daily assurance of our salvation. Only the new creature by God's grace can experience such a life changing, soul altering knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

It is the light and weight and value of the gold that drives the treasure hunter and yet scripture tells us to pursue eternal wisdom, understanding and insight more than choice gold. A right knowledge of our Savior and the salvation He gives will only be known fully in Heaven but Praise God that our pursuit of Him begins here on earth.

There is no time like the present to diligently seek after and grow in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. If we want to love Him more we must know Him more.
