Morning Meditations

Mmmm.....Honey!

"My son, eat honey, for it is good,
and the drippings of the honeycomb are sweet to your taste.
Know that wisdom is such to your soul;
if you find it, there will be a future,
and your hope will not be cut off."    Proverbs 24:13-14

Often times the book of Proverbs refers to wisdom as a treasure.  "Indeed it is like gold, fine gold" and we must seek it more than we would actually seek to find gold. However here we are given the picture of wisdom being like honey.  The writer tells his son to eat it because it is good and sweet to the taste.

"Wisdom is such to your soul."  While many of us would crave something good to eat and even more of us love to have our sweet tooth satisfied, I am afraid we do not crave the wisdom of God in this way.  Most of us could eat honey on warm biscuits or hot tortillas until we are absolutely stuffed and almost immobile. However when it comes to seeking God's wisdom through the reading of His word and time spent in prayer we are more like a small child picking our way through the plate of vegetables that we are being forced to eat.

"The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction."   Proverbs 1:7

It is not that the Word of God IS honey, for often times it can have a bitter taste in the mouths of sinners.  It is not that the wisdom of the Lord IS gold, for many times a poor man has lived and died with nothing but the word of God to hold on to. Instead it is that the Word of God is to be like gold to us.  The wisdom of the Lord is to be like honey to our lips. Like the search for gold we should be filled with joy when we find it. Like honey we should love the very taste of it and never want to spill one drop.

The only way to view the Word of God this way is to have a regenerated heart from the Lord.  The only way to truly have a changed heart is to repent and believe. The only way to repent and believe is to fear the Lord, which is the beginning of knowledge (our love for God's word and wisdom that once was bitterness but now is as sweet as honey and as fine as gold).  And the only way for man to begin to fear the Lord is by grace through faith.

We must ask, seek and knock.  We must cry out for God's grace.  It is not in His salvation that now we will have the treasure of the world.  It is that through His salvation we now see the treasure in His Word that we could not see before.  It is through salvation that we can now "taste and see that The Lord is good."   Psalm 34:8
