Morning Meditations
Two ears but one mouth
When there are many words, transgression is unavoidable, But
he who restrains his lips is wise. (Proverbs 10:19 NASB)
This verse seems to
sum up so much of the major problem of youth and the immature. It seems we all
have something to say all the time. God has an apparent problem with this in
the Book of Proverbs. There are so many verses referencing the babbling fool,
the lips of the perverse, the mouth of the wicked, and they are always in
contrast to the mouth of the righteous and the lips of the wiseman.
Proverbs
10:19 seems to be the ultimate summation of the problem and the cure. Stop
talking as much and you will have and create fewer troubles.
Fools are
encouraged to be quiet and receive the words of the wise. Even among Christian
gatherings it seems everyone wants desperately to put their two cents in when
the text tells us that we should all keep our two cents and listen to whoever
the richest man in the room is with regard to wisdom.
This is a great and
hard lesson for the young and zealous and for the old yet immature. In
disciplining our minds and our bodies we must, according to proverbs, control
our mouths. James calls the tongue a restless evil whom no man can tame.
Let us
pray for the Holy Spirit to come daily and break the stallion of our mouths so
that we will be of use to our master and to others.
