“The Lord told me” is no substitute for “the Bible says...”
I have been thinking lately about the decision making process of Christians lately, including myself. Often times I have used and heard others use statements such as, "I feel the Lord leading me this way" or "The Lord may be telling you to do that but I think He is telling me something different." Granted their are times that there are different directions the Lord leads us, however I think that in a lot of decisions, i.e. marriage, having children, educating children, being in ministry, choosing a church or choosing a job, we use these statements as a cop out to some extent. I know I have used them in situations where I really didn't even pray about the decision.
There are alot of "what's good for you is good for you, but what's good for me is good for me" attitudes in today's world and I am afraid that Christians are more saturated in that attitude than we think. I read the phrase, "The Lord told me” is no substitute for “the Bible says." This really struck a nerve in me that had me asking the question, "If we really believe the Bible is sufficient for everything and we study it to see what the Lord has said on so many subjects, then would our decision making process be much simpler than what we make it?" I sincerely believe our lives should be saturated in prayer, however I do know that I have made some "seemingly tough" decisions based on my knowledge of what the Bible tells me to do. I think the point here is that there is no denying the power of prayer, but too many times we try to listen for what God is going to "say" as opposed to what He has already "said" in scripture. Let's not make our Holy Father repeat himself.
